Everyday, I meet parents and teachers who are looking for help and answers to explain why a child is struggling at school. It is heartbreaking for me to see children try so hard, but despite their best efforts, not progress. It can be extremely frustrating trying to find answers.
As a Dyslexia and Literacy Specialist working for national charity organisations in Melbourne, London and Perth, as well as running my own company in the UK, I helped children overcome their learning challenges through specialist tuition and teacher training.
Despite the high success rate, the underlying causes were still there and they would continue to be a barrier to learning in their future. I knew there had to be more that could be done for students who found learning difficult. So, I began to ask ‘why’ these difficulties occurred and questioned whether the impact of these challenges could be lessened, prevented or even eliminated?
I found that for a long time researchers thought the brain couldn’t change – you were born the way you are. Now, research has proven that is not the case! The brain is waiting for the ‘correct’ connections to be made, but in some cases, by no fault of anyone, no connection or activation is made which leads to learning challenges.
It is through Impact Education that I help empower parents and teachers with evidence-based knowledge and strategies that lay the ‘correct’ foundations to successful learning and provide services that overcome barriers to learning.
